Maggot Menageries: High School Student Contributions to Medicinal Maggot Production in Compromised Healthcare Settings

چکیده
This case study describes how high school students can participate in research, development, and testing of real-life solutions for society’s most intractable problems. In modern warfare, civilians make up the casualties, conflict-affected communities are often isolated have only limited access to healthcare. Most surviving casualties limb wounds from injury or surgery, many these become infected require long-term treatment amputation. 2020, MedMagLabs Queensland Virtual STEM Academy partnered engage co-develop test methods training resources that empower people produce medicinal maggots highly efficacious affordable wound care. Maggot therapy is with living fly larvae remove dead tissue, control infection, promote healing. As opposed citizen science, which mainly focuses on data collection and/or educational awareness-raising outcomes, this project focused co-creation knowledge delivery tangible research outcomes. The measure its success was development end-user friendly maggot production resources. explains scientists researchers collaborated one another achieve objective. Project execution largely line Ten Principles Citizen Science. Further review outcomes self-reflection by team highlight important lessons such collaborative studies, been summarised five recommendations specifically relating collaborations schools student scientists.

Myiasis: maggot infestation.
Myiasis is a condition in which fly maggots feed off, and develop in, the tissues of living organisms. True myiasis results from files deliberately laying eggs in or on the tissues. There are two forms of myiasis: obligate, in which it is necessary for the maggots to feed on living tissues, and facultative, where files opportunistically take advantage of wounds or degenerative necrotic conditio...
متن کاملMaggot debridement therapy
Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) has become more and more common in the treatment of chronic wounds. In the last decade alone, more than 100 papers were published on this subject. MDT is used to aid in removing necrotic tissue from a wound, thus resulting in a reduction of amputations. The limb salvage rate is reported as 50% after use of MDT. This article presents an overview of the history of...

The primitive, carrion-breeding habit of blowflies has been known, recorded and used for medical purposes for centuries past. The aboriginal Ngemba tribe of New South Wales, Australia commonly used maggots to clean suppurating or gangrenous wounds, a practice which they traced back to their remote ancestors [1]. The Hill people of Northern Burma were observed during World War II placing maggots...
متن کاملNonwoven fiber barriers for control of cabbage maggot and onion maggot (Diptera: Anthomyiidae).
We investigated the use of nonwoven fiber barriers for control of cabbage maggot, Delia radicum (L.), and onion maggot, D. antiqua (Meigen). The barriers consist of arrangements of minute fibers loosely intertwined in "web" form. Results from a greenhouse experiment showed that manually applied graphite fibers placed at the base of broccoli plants reduced the number of D. radicum eggs by 64-98%...
